Therapy Is Cool

HOLLER IF YOU HEAR ME! Blame it on mental health stigma and a culture that believes in “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps,” but most of us have picked up on the shame that can be associated with getting counseling or therapy. Many of my clients mention the stigma they have to overcome in order to attend their first counseling session. Sometimes their families say things like, “You’re not strong enough to do it on your own,” or “Wow, something must be ‘wrong’ with you if you need therapy.” I often spend some time talking with my clients on why those comments are straight up ignorant and wrong. Let’s end the stigma.

I have a calling, and it’s to re-brand therapy. I want therapy to be for everyone and the physical, mental, and emotional barriers to therapy to vanish. Therapy is cool. It’s for you. It’s for me. It’s for anyone who has thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It’s really healthy to admit we’re not perfect and that we don’t have it all figured out. A therapeutic relationship is the place to do the work of self exploration and growth. Who else thinks therapy is the coolest? ‍♀️
