Pay It Forward...To Your Inner Child

A friend posted a pic from high school the other day and it got me thinking about 16 year old Tiffany. Inner child work, fam...it’s a powerful place to start lots of healing and growth. Inner child work is about becoming a warm and loving parent to your inner child. It’s about fostering a relationship with yourself that focuses on the needs and experiences of your younger self.

The question is, do you believe, as an adult, that you can be that warm, loving, responsible and caring person to your younger self? To the pieces of you that were harmed and hurt growing up? Just remember...take this on with grace, and compassion, and curiosity and especially non-judgement. And if you don’t feel like you can, that’s the work. To build trust with yourself to get there.

The beauty of inner child work is that as you’re doing the work of meeting your needs as an adult, you’re simultaneously doing that for you inner child. So meeting your needs, consistent self-care, keeping promises to yourself, committing to care for yourself all builds the trust needed to do that work.

So here’s an Inner Child Work Challenge. Find a picture of little you. Tape her to a piece of paper and write down ten affirmations that she needs. Connect to her and give her love. And you’re already on your way to some powerful healing!

Here are MY affirmations to 16 year old Tiffany…

  1. You are enough

  2. You are worthy

  3. You are lovable

  4. Your feelings are valid

  5. You are important

  6. Your values matter

  7. Your needs matter

  8. You are deserving

  9. You have the right to self-care

  10. I HELLA LOVE YOU

  11. YOU’RE A BADASS AND WILL DO AMAZING THINGS

Okay, so I gave her eleven instead of ten...but she deserves it, and so do you.

Therapy is work, fam. Hard work. So much of the work my clients are doing is around faith transition. And not everyone can get into therapy, so I offer monthly classes as an additional resource. This month we’re bringing in guest speaker Kristen Bennion for our Faith Transition Series. She’s a licensed mental health therapist and an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist. Faith and sexuality is a core focus of her practice.

Are you ready to get unstuck and feel empowered in your own sexuality?

Do you want to better understand sexuality in a healthy way?

Do you feel confusion and shame around your own sexuality?

This class is specifically created as a resource for those who have experienced a faith transition or have left their religious faith and are interested in cultivating a healthy relationship with sexuality. Those in attendance can expect...

  • an overview of healthy sexuality and sexual well-being

  • debunking of popular sexual myths

  • discussion of how religion can impact one’s relationship with the self and sexuality

  • how to identify and cope with the concept of sexual shame

  • how to cultivate an empowered relationship with the sexual self

  • practical ways to engage with the world through a sexually healthy lens

Feeling a little hopeful and relieved and maybe not so alone? You’re not, friend. So join Kristen at this special event on Monday, October 28th from 6:30-8:00 at Mindful Counseling.

And if you can’t make it next week, I got you. Use the code INNERCHILD for $60 off my Faith Transition Course. It’s a two hour video course that covers a range of perspectives for those experiencing a faith transition as well as those with loved ones experiencing a faith transition.

You matter. You are worthy. You can do this work.
