How to Accept Pain and Move Through It

Therapy thoughts: Acceptance is making space for pain so we can stop focusing on it.

We are hardwired to resist pain so the practice of acceptance allows us to flow instead of fight. You may have heard that pain is inevitable, but resistance to pain causes suffering. So mindfulness is the practice of accepting this moment without judgement. Imagine applying that to pain; a headache or heartache. Try it next time you stub your toe. Pause and focus on the sensations with acceptance, noticing the pulsing and stinging with a quick “I accept that happened.” Simple, but not natural, so it’s all about practice without judgement. Try it with some emotional pain, lean in and notice with your next observational skills and breathe. “I accept this” is a powerful mantra.
